Alexander Technique of Physiotherapy For Back and Neck Pain
There is a method of physical therapy or physiotherapy that is thought to address many problems a person can have due to poor posture so that not only do the problems go away, but the poor posture is corrected. It is called the Alexander Technique and if you haven’t heard of it you are not alone, but if you have heard of this type of physiotherapy, then you may not only be familiar with how well it works for many people, but maybe it has worked for you.
The Alexander technique was developed by an actor named F.M. Alexander. He was touring with his acting troupe when he noticed that he and his fellow actors were beginning to get hoarse, but couldn’t get a diagnosis from a doctor that was acceptable. Finally, Alexander realized that with his poor posture, his vocal cords were being compressed and causing him to become hoarse. He began to realize that the head, neck and torso controlled good posture and the muscles and functions that the head, neck and torso are in charge of. In other words, in order to have the body function properly, good posture is essential.
Now, the Alexander technique of physiotherapy is used all the time to correct certain back or neck pains that a person might be experiencing. It is also often used to correct poor neck and head posture to eliminate tension in the neck and reduce problems caused from this such as headaches that might occur. The idea behind the Alexander Technique of physiotherapy is to help people correct their posture and use their bodies to their full potential so that all of their systems can function well over all.
Many people have posture problems and begin to feel more tired and suffer from problems such as muscle and back aches, headaches and spinal problems over time. It is also thought by many practitioners of the Alexander Technique that poor posture can even affect how we digest food, and could have something to do with all the digestive problems we see today. Many of us are in such a hurry with our daily lives that we aren’t thinking about an essential for well being: our posture, so it makes sense that over time we develop slouches and slubs that can create health issues.
The good news is that you can learn the Alexander Technique of physiotherapy and learn how to not only correct your posture, but work to ensure that you are always standing, sitting and lying properly. If you’re wary of the process, don’t worry, it has been broken down into a series of exercises that will help you to easily and naturally relax muscles that might be tense and strengthen muscles that are weak in an effort to properly align the body and encourage it to correct itself.
The Alexander Technique of physiotherapy isn’t recommended for everyone, but if you have minor aches and pains and are looking to rejuvenate yourself, feel better and have more energy, then you might benefit from this type of physiotherapy for yourself.
